Waitangi Weekend Champs (all classes)

Date: 3/02/18
Time: CANCELLED (Gates Open @ )

CANCELLATION NOTICE: WAITANGI WEEKEND CHAMP THIS SAT (FEB 3) CANCELLED. 24 HOURS OF RAIN OVER WEDS/THURS HAS LEFT THE TRACK SO SODDEN THAT THERE IS NO HOPE OF MAKING IT RACE READY.

This Waitangi Weekend, on Saturday (Feb 3) in Cromwell the flag drop time at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway is 6pm rather than the previously advertised 5.30pm. The reason for this is the impact the heat wave has had on track preparation. Hopefully the weather gods are smiling on Saturday and you'll be in for a night that will fuel your need for speed with adrenaline-pumping wheel to wheel dirt track action.

Saturday, February 3 from 6pm they'll all be racing to win their class championship...

Saloons... Race-bred 'Monsters of Speedway' with 400hp V8's and covering their sophisticated space frame chassis, fibreglass body panels replicating Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros and other American muscle cars.

Super Saloons... This class looks just like saloons and shares many race parts but gulps down methanol and puts around 700+ horsepower on to the clay. Super Saloons also provide drivers with some seven toggles, knobs and levers to make shocks and brake bias adjustment during a race.

Sprintcars... Crowned by a large wing over the driver's cockpit and a smaller one between the front wheels, these 800 - 900 open wheelers are speedway's fastest class reaching speeds of around 160kph on the straights between the two ends of 500m long Heavy Trax Roofing Central Motor Speedway.

Six Shooters... Often referred to as 'wingless sprintcars', this is a class that deservedly is gaining in driver and spectator popularity. Almost all are sprintcar chassis repowered by a Holden Commodore 3.8 litre V6. Although created as a feeder to sprintcars, many drivers enjoy racing six-shooters so much that they stay with the class.

Youth Ministocks... Looking like stockcars that have shrunk in a hot wash, these 1200cc powered race at speeds that make it hard to believe that drivers are just 12 to 16 year olds. Surprisingly good fun to watch.

Productions... Want to have a go at speedway then this is the class for you. Get hold of a cheap Subaru, Mitzi, Mazda or whatever, strip it down to a bare shell, install a roll cage and race seat, and you're away. Production drivers' ages range from teenagers to over 70 years old.
